Verification word tip
Sometimes if you have a slow Internet connection OR you are posting a long ad and accidentally forget to enter the verification word, you may have troubling getting the graphic at appear or reappear. Here is a time saving trick I learned to work around that.
When you are posting to Craigslist, you will quickly notice that you must type in what is called a verification word. These are also called Captchas (see this Wikipedia entry for interesting facts about them). These are getting more common on the Internet (I even use them if you leave me a comment on this story), because they help to prevent computer programs from leaving spam messages or posts.
Unfortunately, they can also be a nuisance for users, and in the case of Craigslist, the trouble can come from two reasons. I will address each of these below:- You have a slow Internet connection or the system has a slow moment right at the point you have posted your item, and the verification image does not appear. I have had this happen several times.
- You are posting an item that is longer than your screen, and you forget to deal with the verification process which is at the bottom of the screen. You might think you are done, and click on your account name to get back to your posting management screen. In this case, when you try to go back to your post to finish it, often the verification word graphic will not reload.
The trick that I have found is to use the "hear verification word" link, which opens up a new tab in your browser and downloads a little audio clip of a woman reading out the letters that would appear on the graphic. I am sure this was mainly done for visually impaired users, but it could save you from having to potentially retype a long post.
