Tip on providing contact information or links in your posting
When posting anything to Craigslist there is always a field for email address back to you. But this is optional, and there are several ways to handle how you focus the reader's action.
While it is optional to have an email address for the Craigslist readers to respond to you, you may want to handle this a bit differently, especially if you are trying to get them to visit your website or online product. here are some of your choices:
- You can post your ad on CL and give an email for readers responses to you. This is the default method used on CL, and the advantage is that users can quickly click on the anonymous email link on CL and send you a message. The drawback is that you have to respond to (potentially) lots of emails.
- You could forgo an email entirely, instead making a hyper-link back to your own website a part of your description. The drawback to this is that the CL readers may not want to leave the site they are using, and therefore just skip your material entirely. In this case, it is probably worth your while to include as much in your description as possible, to "sell" the reader into using following your link.
- You could also decide to include an email that is actually an autoresponder email. An autoresponder email address is one that is setup to send a pre-canned email response to any email sen to that address. You would do this by posting using this email as your login address (if you are using a CL account) or by having it send a confirmation email to that email address. You would do that by turning the autoresponder off while you are doing posting. When all your confirmations are completed, you could turn the autoresponder email back on and have it automatically reply with any emails form readers. The email your system sends could include a link to your website or products, etc. You will want to be careful to not give the impression of sending SPAM, as that will turn off many potential customers. Just try to give them the information and links in a straightforward manner.
However you decide to provide a way for readers to find out more information, please make sure you avoid making your Craigslist posting a SPAM posting. Not only will that repel some customers, it may also get your postings flagged as SPAM.
