The formating of your Craigslist post can be important.
You can improve the effectiveness of your writing for online web pages, including Craigslist ad postings.
Studies have shown that people read about 25% slower when scanning online web pages, than when they are reading paper material. If you keep this in mind when writing and posting ads on Craigslist (or any other online classified ad system), the following tips may help you get your message across to more people:
- Avoid having postings with long, unbroken pages of text. Break the text up on the page by using bullet statements. This helps pull the reader's eye to your main points.
- Avoid making very long paragraphs. Keep these to about 4 or 5 lines of text.
- If you use HTML coding, try breaking long blocks of text into columns. It has worked on newspaper copy for 100+ years...
- Avoid using underlines in your writing for anything except actual hyperlinks. People reading online are expecting that all hyperlinks are easy to spot, use, or avoid.
- Use clear, short, and honest ad copy. Craigslist users are very savvy about SPAM, and you will not get far with sensational claims, etc. Get to the point as quickly as you can on the post. You may only have a reader for a very few seconds before they click on to the next posting.
