Know More Than Your Competition

My name is Jamie Robe, and I developed a series of maps and reports for my own website promotion and product guerilla marketing projects. They proved very helpful in focusing my most limited resource - time. I am a Geographic Information System (GIS) professional and a website designer, so I had the knowledge of how to use GIS to geocode and join the Craigslist websites with demographic information. Believe me, it is not easy and it is not a perfect process, but I believe this produced useful and unique data.

I soon realized I had valuable data that others did not have...
Market Demographic Data + Know-How = $$$$

Market Data + Know-How = $

Just through talking to friends and business people about my projects, I started getting word-of-mouth requests from other entrepreneurs and authors who needed the same type of information. Once you have seen Google Analytics reports showing increased website traffic, it is hard not to get excited about all the possibilities. I finally decided to offer this to a larger audience, and I hope that it can help you in your efforts to better understand the particular populations you are trying to reach.

To find out about the history of Craigslist, I recommend reading the Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craigslist. It is staggering to see how it gets 5 BILLION page views a month, 10 MILLION new classified posts each month.

I highly respect Craigslist, its rules, and its philosophy, so I hope the information on this website and my eBook helps you reach whatever target market with the least postings. Saves you time and reduces spam.

Two Main Parts To The eBook
"Craigslist for Entrepreneurs" is divided into two parts.
  • Part 1 is basically the beginner’s step-by-step guide to posting free ads to Craigslist cities.
  • Part 2 explains and links to the easy-to-understand demographic data and maps about Craigslist.org market areas to help you target your online sales and boost blog and website traffic.
The following is a screenshot of the Table of Contents page:

Remember that the 40 page eBook "Craigslist for Entrepreneurs" is hyperlinked to other much larger files in PDF format. Here is an outline of those materials:

Maps of the US Craigslist Sites
These three PDF maps can be used on your screen, as well as can be plotted out up to a huge 30" X 40" paper map. I wanted to see where these Craigslist websites were actually located, so they have been joined to a logical urban area. Some are more general (like a whole state), but the more populated areas make a lot of sense. The websites are hyperlinks, so you can click and open the Craigslist site in your browser. The maps are shaded based on some interesting state level data:
(Click here to see larger example of the first map described below)
Map showing CL sites and 2005 State Census Population
A color map (in PDF format) showing all 50 US states with the 2005 population shaded, with the estimated location of all 289 Craigslist website areas (which are hyperlinks to the sites). Can be viewed in Adobe Reader or printed up to E-sized on paper.
Map showing CL sites and Percentage Internet Usage by State
A color map (in PDF format) showing all 50 US states with Percentage Internet Usage shaded, with the estimated location of all 289 Craigslist website areas (which are hyperlinks to the sites). Can be viewed in Adobe Reader or printed up to E-sized on paper.
Map showing CL sites and Internet Using Population
A color map (in PDF format) showing all 50 US states with Population Likely using Internet shaded, with the estimated location of all 289 Craigslist website areas (which are hyperlinks to the sites). Can be viewed in Adobe Reader or printed up to E-sized on paper.
Presorted Reports
This is a series of 4 PDF reports that list the 289 Craigslist websites in order of 4 different variables. This gives you a comparative analysis, possibly useful when identifying where you want to focus your efforts.
  • CL Sites Sorted by Number of Posts (as of March 2007) - indicates activity level of a particular Craigslist website.
  • CL Sites Sorted by Regional Population (2000 Census) -
  • Provides some general idea of possible size of various markets served.
  • CL Sites Sorted by Posts per Population - A possible indicator of how much penetration Craigslist is getting in a particular website.
  • CL Sites Sorted by Regional Population Density - possibly indicates the general viability of service delivery for a business based on community compactness.
ZIP Code Analysis
This is a 237 page report of all the ZIP codes associated geographically with all the Craigslist websites. I did this extensive analysis for two reasons:
  • There is a 2005 Census Population estimate for the 5 digit ZIP Code areas all over the United States, so that gives some updated numbers.
  • ZIP Codes are understandable areas, that customers and business people can relate to. You can use this to look at ZIP Codes buyers are reporting back to see how they are using the posts to find your products, services, or website.
  • You can look up even more detailed ZIP Code level data on publically accessible websites, so you can use my report to get the ZIP Codes to study for a particular Craigslist market
The following screenshot is a sample from this report:
Census Tract Analysis
Much like the ZIP Code level data, Census Tracts are units used by the U.S. Census to count and quantify the types of people in a relatively small geographic area (supplied in both PDF and as Excel Spreadsheet).
  • I did a GIS analysis of all the urbanized areas likely served by Craigslist websites, and the findings are all in this 30 page PDF table. Instead of listing all the Census Tract numbers, which mean little to most people, I summarized them buy CL site.
  • You will find over 40 variables collected by the Census for each area, including things like number of hispanics, average family size, and number of renters.
The table below is just one Craigslist website (the Tampa Bay Area in Florida) as an example. Scroll through it to see all the interesting variables:
Definitions of the Data = Metadata
You will find a 6 page PDF file entitled "Metadata about Fields in Summary Table of Census Tracts in Likely CL Website Areas", listing the Census defintions for the data variables used above.
This gives you an understanding of exactly what each of the fields means.
Click here to download the actual PDF of the metadata.
